If you are Chilean, you do not need a passport to came Easter Island. Foreigners need a passport which is mandatory and essential for money exchange, among others. No visa or vaccination certificate is required to enter Rapa Nui.

As it is Chilean territory, Chileans can come into the Island with sealed packed food products, except for fruit, seeds or grains, vegetables or unprocessed animal products, soil, firearms, ammunition or explosives, illegal drugs, biological products, veterinary drugs, pets or animals, living or dead species.

Water from the village of Hanga Roa is completely drinkable, but tourists are always recommended to drink bottled or boiled water. If you go out to eat at a local restaurant, it is customary to leave a tip equivalent to 10 percent of the check.

In order to maintain the legacy of the Rapa Nui culture, visitors should consider the following: it is forbidden to climb the Ahu (ceremonial altars) or damage the Moai (giant stone statues on the memory of the illustrious ancestors who watch over their descendants from above). It is also not allowed to enter in the Orongo ceremonial houses, which is the most spectacular setting of the island.

If you visit Easter Island in February, it would be ideal to plan your trip for the first two weeks of the month when the Tapati Rapa Nui festival is celebrated, which has a vibrant program of traditional music, dance and cultural events.
